mirVana™ miRNA Isolation Kit uses a rapid procedure based on a high-efficiency glass fiber filtration column (GFF ) method to isolate small RNA from tissues and cells. This method can isolate total RNA ranging in size from kilobases to 10 mers. Each kit contains enough reagents and consumables for 40 isolations of total RNA (including small RNA), or 20 isolations of separate large and small RNA fractions. Phenol must be purchased separately. Features of this kit include:

Efficient recovery of small RNA
Current RNA purification procedures rely on organic extraction followed by alcohol precipitation or adsorption of nucleic acid molecules on GFF or silicate matrices. Unfortunately, the former procedure requires alcohol precipitation, which is time-consuming and does not efficiently recover small RNAs. The latter procedure often results in the loss of large amounts of small RNAs. The mirVana™ miRNA Isolation Kit uses organic extraction followed by purification on GFF under dedicated binding and wash conditions. Therefore, this kit can efficiently recover all RNAs (from large mRNA and ribosomal RNA up to 10 mer) from almost all cell and tissue types. mirVana™ miRNA Isolation Kit can be isolated from samples consisting of 10²–10⁷ cultured cells or 0.5–250 mg tissue Total RNA (including small RNA).

Enrich small RNAs
Although the mirVana™ miRNA Isolation Kit efficiently purifies all RNA >10 nt, it also includes isolation Procedures for RNA fractions, specifically enrichment or depletion of small RNA species. RNA molecules ∼200 nt and smaller can be efficiently purified from larger RNA species using the enrichment procedure included with themirVana™ miRNA Isolation Kit. The resulting RNA preparation is highly enriched in miRNA, siRNA and/or snRNA. Small RNA enrichment using themirVana™ miRNA Isolation Kit procedure results in more sensitive small RNA detection with less background than when the same assay is used with total RNA.
